The Australian Wars, the 2022 documentary for Blackfella Films, directed by Rachel Perkins, has been a great inspiration for the Defending Country website. You will see quotes from it throughout the site. Congratulations to all concerned for its awards for Best Direction in Non-Fiction Television, Best Documentary or Factual Program and Best Editing in a Documentary Program at the 2024 Australian Academy of Cinema and Television Arts (AACTA) awards.
The SBS item on the AACTA awards lists many other accolades won by the doco, including Best Documentary/Factual Series at the 2023 Australian International Documentary Awards. The series is accessible here.
It seems clear that changing attitudes at the Australian War Memorial about the Frontier Wars were influenced by the Memorial Council’s viewing of this documentary in 2022.
