Northern Territory Treaty
The First Nations peoples of the Northern Territory never ceded sovereignty of their lands, seas and waters and were self-governing in accordance with their traditional laws and customs. In June 2018, the NT Government and four Aboriginal Land Councils signed the historic Barunga Agreement, a Memorandum of Understanding between these parties under which the NT Government is to fund a Northern Territory Treaty Commission to consult and report about a possible treaty-making framework in the Northern Territory.

Nulungu Research Institute is a Kimberley-based organisation of collaborating Aboriginal and non-Indigenous researchers, each with extensive practical and theoretical knowledge. Nulungu’s vision is ‘to conduct exceptional and collaborative research which is transformative, decolonising and of value to Aboriginal people’. Nulungu encourages the pursuit of excellence in research through valuing community-based Indigenous knowledge. Nulungu focuses on the core research themes of culture country and Language, transformational education, Aboriginal wellbeing, sustainable lifeways and social justice, and policy, practice and evaluation.

Provides strategic advice to the Minister on issues affecting Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people living in the ACT. It coordinates a whole-of-government approach to issues affecting residents and supports the Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander committees and representative bodies.

Responsible for providing support, engagement and advice to Aboriginal people and government on significant Aboriginal Affairs priorities through strategic Aboriginal policy matters, key projects and meaningful engagement and partnerships. OAA comprises Aboriginal Affairs Strategic Partnerships and the Aboriginal Interpreter Services. It contributes to the commitments in the ‘Everyone Together’ Aboriginal Affairs Strategy and National Agreement on Closing the Gap. It works in partnership with Aboriginal people and communities to support social, economic and cultural aspirations of Aboriginal Territorians.

The new Aboriginal Partnerships approach works to embed Aboriginal led co-design processes and Aboriginal knowledges across all government agencies. The Office oversees and coordinates the Government’s significant Aboriginal Affairs agenda, informed by the views of Aboriginal people, which includes the Truth-Telling and Treaty processes, as well as Closing the Gap to improve better social, cultural and economic outcomes for Tasmanian Aboriginal People.

Hearing the truth about our shared histories helps us to understand how past laws, policies and practices have, and continue to, impact Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples. It also helps us to heal. It is an important step on the Path to Treaty.

The website (run by the Human Rights Commission) provides information on the campaign and resources to support learning about and action against racism. This website also hosts the Workplace Cultural Diversity Tool, a free, online, confidential self-assessment tool for organisations seeking to strengthen their approach to cultural diversity and anti-racism in the workplace. The Racism. It Stops With Me campaign invites us to ask ourselves important questions about the role of racism in shaping society, the way we see ourselves and how we interact with one another.
